Delhi to set up 30 new fire stations
India's News.Net Friday 4th July, 2008 (IANS)
At least 351 people have lost their lives and over 2,000 were injured in fire accidents in the last one year, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said here Friday and announced that 30 more fire stations would be set up in the city.
Dikshit, however, praised the fire department for curbing 15,718 fire incidents and protecting loss of property worth over Rs.2.93 billion.
'Thirty more fire stations would be set up in Delhi with an aim to extend fire protection coverage, keeping in view the coming up of more and more new colonies,' the chief minister said while inaugurating a new fire station at Hari Nagar in West Delhi.
She added that the government has already set up disaster management centres at Laxmi Nagar, Rohini and Nehru Place fire stations.
The new fire station at Hari Nagar has been built at a cost of Rs.45 million. A new fire station at Bawana in east Delhi would be commissioned later this month, she said.
'It is becoming necessary to set up new fire stations as large-scale multi-storeyed buildings and colonies are coming up, resulting in more residents in the colony,' Dikshit said.
'It has been decided to increase the number of fire stations up to 70 during the 11th Five Year Plan period,' she said.
