India's News.Net Friday 4th July, 2008 (IANS)
The University Grant Commission (UGC) Friday announced a Rs.20 million grant for developmental work at the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University (RKMVU).
Speaking at the third Foundation Day and special convocation of the RKMVU at the Ramakrishna Mission's global headquarters Belur Math in Howrah district, UGC chairman Sukhdev Thorat said the grant has been sanctioned for setting up departments of mathematics and Indology at the varsity.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G. Madhavan Nair in his convocation address said that despite remarkable achievements in various fields, India's progress has been hampered by its rising population.
The resultant unemployment or underemployment is a major obstacle in the nation's goal to emerge as a fully developed nation by 2020, he said.
