Taj replica to wow tourists at Agra show
India's News.Net Thursday 28th August, 2008 (IANS)
It took seven years of chiselling and carving by 28 craftsmen and designers. Made in pure white Makrana marble like the original 17th century monument, a Taj Mahal replica will be opened to the public as part of a glitzy stage show from Friday.
The model, built upon a 12 x 12 ft area, weighs 8,250 kg. The workmanship and stone inlay work closely resemble the original. It will be showcased at the 400-seat Kalakriti auditorium specially built for the show.
Ashok Jain, the entrepreneur-promoter of the project, told IANS: 'For some time, we were feeling that tourists were not getting their due, with all kinds of restrictions on movement and photography.
'Now through our exciting and innovative presentation of a song and drama spectacle involving 60 artists, we have tried to marry the traditional media with the latest gadgetry, audio visual technology, including laser. The Taj will be presented in 10 different moods, representing varying seasons and hours of the day.'
The model of the Taj will appear on stage with the help of a hydraulic lift as laser beams dance all over, creating an ecstatic climax for the spectacle titled 'Mohabbat -the Taj'.
The show will a love story set in the 17th century ambience and woven around the Taj. Love is after all synonymous with the Taj, said Jain.
The replica of the Taj will continue to be open to the public even when the show is over, said Jain.
The show has been directed by Mohan Singh Rathod. Songs have been sung by Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, and Kavita Krishnamurthy.
'We had experimented successfully with a similar show in Khajuraho for 11 years before embarking on this project which will give tourists another reason to stay back in the city for the night,' said Jain.
The thematic drama will definitely give the city of the Taj Mahal a new identity, say the artistes associated with the 90-minute show that will present Mughal splendour in all its glory plus the famous Braj ki Holi and some patriotic songs.
