The three major American Automakers, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, have decided to introduce new fuel-efficient vehicles.

The Detroit North International Auto Show has shown some of the cars which the automakers hope will turn around the American buyer.

The livelihood of thousands of autoworkers in Detroit is dependent on car sales this year, and hundreds of GM employees turned up at the car show to shout slogans of support for the new models.

The employees waved signs that said '40 miles per gallon' and 'we're electric.'

GM has introduced the prototype Chevrolet Volt Concept Car, a vehicle propelled by an electric motor powered by a battery.

Chrysler has made a commitment to have an extended-range electric vehicle as part of its lineup in 2010.

And Ford has said it will work with partners to develop electric vehicles.
