ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Justice Ayesha Malik took her oath as a Supreme Court judge on Monday, becoming the country's first female judge to reach the highest court.
In a ceremony held in the Supreme Court's ceremonial hall, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed administered the oath to Justice Malik.
It is worth noting that Justice Malik was fourth in seniority among LHC justices, and bar councils and associations had opposed her appointment to the Supreme Court because she violated the principle of seniority.
Following the ceremony, reporters asked the Chief Justice whether he thought Ayesha's appointment was based on her being a judge or a woman, to which he replied, "woman."
Malik attended Harvard University and has been a high court judge in Lahore for the past two decades.
