DUBAI, U.A.E: An Indian fighter jet crashed during the Dubai Air Show this week, killing its only pilot. The HAL Tejas went down moments after takeoff during a demonstration flight at Al Maktoum International Airport, erupting into a fireball as thick black smoke rose into the sky.

Emergency vehicles and a helicopter rushed to the scene and worked to put out the flames.

Families and spectators watching from grandstands gasped as the aircraft appeared to lose control and plunge straight into the ground.

The Indian Air Force confirmed the pilot died in the crash, saying it "deeply regrets the loss of life" and has ordered an inquiry into the cause. Authorities in the UAE will also conduct their own investigation.

The air show resumed about 90 minutes later, even as crews continued work at the crash site.

Tejas is India's homegrown fighter jet, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It is designed to strengthen India's air fleet amid China's expanding military influence in the region. India recently signed contracts for 97 additional jets, with deliveries expected in 2027. An earlier order for 83 aircraft has faced delays due to engine shortages.

A day before the crash, India denied social media claims that a Tejas at the show had leaked oil, calling them false and an attempt to undermine confidence in the aircraft. A video circulating online showed liquid dripping from a jet, but officials said it was routine water drainage due to Dubai's humid weather.

A Tejas fighter also crashed last year in India's Rajasthan state, though the pilot survived that incident.
